As a trainer and/or assessor you should be aware that the NSSC, which  is responsible for setting the required competency standards required by VET trainers and assessors, has recently updated the requirements for the training and assessment industry.  In part, it has said, as recently as 17 Jun 2013:

“The National Skills Standard Council (NSSC) is responsible for determining the training and assessment competencies to be held by trainers and assessors in accordance with:

  • Standard 1.4 of the AQTF Essential Conditions and Standards for Initial and
  • Continuing Registration, as well as
  • SNR 4.4 and
  • SNR 15.4 of the Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations as set out below.

In the main, similar wording is used for the standards for AQTF and VQF,  i.e., trainers and assessors must:

  1. have the necessary training and assessment competencies determined by the National Quality Council or its successors (in this case the NSSC), and
  2. have the relevant vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered or assessed, and
  3. can demonstrate current industry skills directly relevant to the training / assessment being undertaken, and
  4. continue to develop their Vocational Education and Training (VET) knowledge and skills as well as their industry currency and trainer/ assessor competence.”

OBjective

This site has been designed to assist the Australian VET trainer and assessor in meeting the obligations for professional development (PD).

There are many web sites describing the knowledge requirements for RTOs and their managers and administrators. This site is not intended to replace these excellent resources.  The information/learning at this site has been developed by a VET trainer/assessor who ran their own RTO for 15 years, up until the end of October 2012. This  site is intended for, but not restricted to, the VET trainer and assessor to contribute to the development of knowledge and skills through  continual PD, as defined above.

The site is planned to be developed in the future to support those who assist the trainer and assessor in their duties and responsibilities for the RTO. This will commence with RTO admin staff and may extend to others such as RTO Managers, Compliance Officers and so on.

Evidence

Evidence of PD may occur in many forms.  However, some PD does not provide anything other than proof of attendance.  PD at this web site will, in most cases:

  • require application in the workplace, and
  • subsequent reflection of that application,
  • along with proof of that application.

It will be recorded and reviewed, with feedback provided where necessary, to indicate the skills and/or knowledge obtained, and your identified progress. A certificate of acknowledgement for your efforts will be available only after the whole process has been completed. Points (see below) will be awarded according to the amount of work that is applied.

points system

The PD provided at this web site is worthwhile PD and a system of points will be awarded to contribute to annual points for professional development.  While this may not ‘hold much water’ at present in the VET sector, at least you will be able to compare with other points systems being introduced. It is not an official view at this stage but it will allow you and/or your RTO to track your annual achievements, and perhaps even set your

membership

You can apply for individual training snippets and pay the full recommended cost for each snippet.

You can apply for annual membership at $95 per year and receive 2 free snippets.

You can obtain membership via an RTO application but this does not transfer to another RTO if you should move.  This will entitle you to 50% off the cost of your training.
